“The Bini Rejected Obaseki’s Advice” A Rebuttal

“The Bini Rejected Obaseki’s Advice” A Rebuttal

Our attention has been drawn to a report in The Nation Newspaper of January 4, 2016 with a most misleading headline where our Principal, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki was reported to have said during a recent family gathering over the Yuletide festivities that the Bini’s rejected Obaseki’s advice leading to the British Invasion of 1897.

This is a deliberate distortion by the reporter, to intentionally malign and misrepresent Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

For the avoidance of doubt, during this event, Mr. Obaseki espoused the view that the Bini speaking people of Edo South have been largely economically and educationally disadvantaged as a result of the British invasion of 1897 due to the looting of our heritage and abrupt distruption  of our civilization. He then advised that the Ogbeidoyo/Obaseki family as a prominent and large family in Bini had a responsibility to take this as a challenge to play a proactive role in restoring the economic and social fortunes of the Binis. This, he pointed out was the motivation, among other issues of great concern to our dear state, that encouraged him to engage in the political process towards rebuilding our great kingdom and state.

To further underscore the mischief of the writer, Mr. Godwin Obaseki was quoted out of context when he was said to have described the Obaseki family as the largest family in Benin Kingdom. As a bonafide Bini son, Mr. Obaseki cannot rewrite or distort the well -known history of the land of his birth.

It cannot therefore be contested that the Royal family is the largest family in Benin Kingdom and the Obasekis have continued to enjoy a good relationship with the Palace and the Royal family. Mr. Obaseki hereby restates his loyalty and obeisance to the palace and reaffirms his unwavering commitment to fulfilling the dream of our ancestors to build a State that is truly industrialised, productive and focused on the social and economic well being of the average Edo Citizen.

We urge the good citizens of Edo State and Bini sons and daughters in particular to disregard the said publication of January 4 2016 in The Nation newspapers. We call for vigilance especially as political manouevering intensifies towards the 2016 Edo Gubernatorial elections so that unsuspecting persons are not hoodwinked and misled by hatchet men and unprofessional journalists.
